  • The block is NOT the B230, it is the older B23, stroked to 2,5 litres. No balance axles at the bigger bearings.

Change timing belt regularly, otherwise it will be expensive...

  • @millgard I assure you it is a B230 block. Besides the fact that it looks different than a B23 block, it has B230 cast into the block. They never made a 2.5L version of the B23. There were two versions made for marine applications, the AQ151 (8v SOHC with 531 head and V cam, dual carbs), and the AQ171 (16v DOHC, dual carbs), and both used the B230 block. I have two complete AQ171 engines and an AQ151 in parts in my garage, I think you are thinking of the B234 block with balance shafts.

  • Come to think of it, yours actually SOUND much better than mine. Almost like a gurgling V8!

Am aware of were they were also found "landbased", but did not know of the version for the Volvo 940.

Do you know which, if any, car based water pump that might work on these? I need a "take off" (like in cars) for a heater down in my cabin + I fear that the pump will have to be replaced one day in any case. Here in the US = VERY pricey... :-(

On the other hand, engine has less than 900 hours.

  • @wellcraft19 The block is a B230, same as used in all 4 cylinder 240/740/760/940 from 85 until I think 93 in the US, so a water pump for any of those will bolt up. Can't say if the pump is the same part number or not though. The Hepu brand pump is generally considered the best replacement for those motors.

I just picked up another AQ171C yesterday actually that I will be parting out, so if you are interested in anything, let me know. Engine was recently rebuilt.

  • @wellcraft19 Yes it is very rare. These engines where also delivered in some Volvo 240 and 740 but as an automotive setup with shorter crank giving it 2,3L and approx 155BHP. Very high aftermarketvalue due to high popularity amongst streetracers and tuners (in northern europe) The 940 series came with a more modern version featuring external oilpump and contrarotating balanceshaft and turbo intercooler giving it 195BHP.

  • Interesting. I have the exact same engine in my boat. A rare engine (with very expensive parts) but luckily so far no major issues.

I know some people use this block for (street) racing thanks to its unique DOCH head. Will you mount back in a boat, or use ashore?

  • runs really good.
