When WWII broke out, my father enlisted in the Class V-7 U S Navy Reserve program. In March 1943 he completed his college requirements at Athens State College in Athens, AL and left for Midshipmens School at Columbia University. When the college graduation was held, he could not return to Alabama. The war was spent on the LST 227 in the Pacific.

He participated in the summer graduation exercises August 23, 2008 at Athens State University. He wore a cap and gown and received his original diploma 65 years late. This is the news story done by a Huntsville, AL TV station.

  • Mr Barton, I seen this video recently and noticed that your father served on the LST 227,, My father also served on the same ship during those years, I was wondering if maybe he would remember. My father passed in 2001 but I do know that the old shipmates went through a lot and share some things we will never realize together
