Jeffries prime was 1888-1902. Johnson was hardly a contender at that point in time. He was fresh off ko losses to men like Klondyke Haynes and an older Joe Choynski. Johnson's later loss to the very ordinary Marvin Hart did not help his claim to title shot during Jeffreis reign. Johnson did not reach his peak until after Jeffreis retirement. Johnson did beat Jack Jeffries.

Both were novices at the time. Use caution when citing Johnson's personal writings. He claimed to be a US spy in WWI

Johnson challenged him multiple times, but Jeffries couldn't afford to go against a black on account of the loss of immage he would suffer at a loss. He drew what they than called the 'color line', which John L. Sullivan put in place.

Actually Johnson challenged Jeffries multiple times when he was in his prime. Johnson even beat Jeffries brother Jack in a fair fight. There is a very good biography on Johnson. It's called 'Unforgivable Blackness' you should read it, It contains a lot of material from Johnson's personal diary and a lot of interviews with eyewitnesses.
