Thank you, GeorgiaBulletin. I suppose that Abbot Bernard of Clairvaux was a bit of an iconoclast. The Trappist church monastery in Kentucky where Merton lived was remodeld after Vatican II, and the results were less than pleasing. It is too simple and spartan. One has to hunt for a religious image. This is 360 degrees from the Eastern Orthodox take on liturgical worship. Some simplicity is okay but this modernist tendency towards empty and barren is just too cold.

Looks Lutheran. The church could be low Anglican or Methodist. Why are TRappist churches so bare with as little religious iconography as possible? This is too Novus Ordo for me.
