October 25, 2010 marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of Virgil Fox. It gives me great pleasure to post several of the pieces I was privileged to study with him over the 10 years I spent as his student. In the spirit of 'honoring the master', I submit these performances in a style similar to his. They contain the essence of what he taught me about music in general and organ playing in particular.

In my youth I was often dismissively accused of being a "carbon copy" of Fox, but the fact is that I sought to study with him because I identified with his approach more than others that were accessible to me. Each of us "gets" music a little differently and that diversity keeps life interesting.
I owe Virgil Fox much. He turned my early interest in the organ into a passion for playing them and his touring organ sowed the seed for the eventual founding of Marshall & Ogletree. We all have heroes and he is certainly one of mine. Go Virgil!

  • Doug's mastery of toe studs, his fingering, slection of stops, and the constant use and changing of registration and use of piston control is something to watch with AWE,and admiration. What a learning experience for all of us. Thank you sir!

  • Very musical performance, I'm sure dear Virgil is smiling. Good to hear phrasing in contemporary playing. Makes me think of Tom Hazelton.
