I included this video, not to embarrass our former Vice President, but to address an issue that won't seem to go away. Yes he said it. Yes he apparently misspoke. In 1969 ARPANet had its first test by connecting four computers from the UCLA, the Stanford Research Institute, U Cal Santa Barbara, and the U of Utah. The first message was sent between UCLA and SRI. Leonard Kleinrock, who worked at UCLA, describes what happened when the message "login' was typed:
We set up a telephone connection between us and the guys at SRI
We typed the L and we asked on the phone,
Do you see the L?
Yes, we see the L, came the response.
We typed the O, and we asked, Do you see the O?
Yes, we see the O.
Then we typed the G, and the system crashed

Google or just look at the Wiki pages for High Performance Computing Act of 1991 or Al Gore and information technology... Case closed. End of debate.

We use YouTube and the web totday because the "Gore Bill" funded the build-out of the damned thing. What happened? "In the fall of 1990, there were just 313,000 computers on the Internet; by 1996, there were close to 10 million." Its called exponential growth and was what Gore meant to happen. Look it up and stop being ignornate of history.

Create and Invent are synonyms you boneheads. Either way this guy was, and always will be a bozo.

If, in fact, he meant he helped evolve the Internet into what it is today by voting for funding, he would have said so. He tried to pass this off and got caught.

Not at all. "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the internet." Taking the initiative is just him saying that he put his vote in to fund it. He doesn't mean "initiative" in the sense that he is the one who "got up and did something about it." And he did "take the initiative" by voting to fund the ARPANet and spreading the word about it. I think he mainly forgot that people don't always understand politician speak, leaving room for misapprehension.

FYI, He doesn't say he helped create the internet, If you watch it again you will notice that he says, "I took the initiative in creating the internet".

The internet began in 1969, when Al Gore was 21. When he made the statement that he invented the internet, he was on stage in front of an audience. It was well before this interview, more like 1988 during his first presidential try.

Exactly, he NEVER said he invented the internet. The word "create" has more than one definition, in the context he used it, it means the same as "build".

which laid led to the National Information Infrastructure, which Gore himself dubbed the "Informaton Super Highway." This network connected localities over high speed networks and evolved into the internet.
