Discussion surrounding the Okhta skyscraper has been constant since plans were announced last year and debate continues to rage. Will the 400-meter building overshadow and destroy the panorama of St. Peters-burg? Is this ambitious project at odds with the centuries-old architectural traditions of the city? And finally -- to build or not to build?
Experts from Bunker 51, a pioneering German architectural firm, believe that St. Petersburg is in need of such a building, but with minor modifications. They are offering an alternative skyscraper, replicating all the standard features of the original design, from the dimensions to the price. The architectural characteris-tics of the project remain uncompromised: a building of concrete and steel shaped as spurts of flame.
The only revision made by the German architects is the design's inversion. If the plan is implemented, the central feature of St. Petersburg's Krasnogvardeisky district will be an underground structure providing a unique subterranean space catering for both commercial and social needs. This unique project is anticipated to become an architectural first which is entirely invisible to St. Petersburg.
