Public re-address of George Maciunas' interpretation of Philip Corners Piano Activities (1962). 2009

Produced by Creative Thriftshop and Lynn Del Sol.
Special thanks to the Williamsburg Gallery Association for the opportunity and to Joe and Dave for a smashing good time.

Performed July 11, 2009 Williamsburg Brooklyn

Adapting the gradual destruction of a piano that was originally performed at the First Fluxus festival in Wiesbaden, Germany in 1962. The act evolved over the course of the day, inviting onlookers to partake in the ruin of an instrument and to demystify the artistic process for the public, reducing something of value to an arbitrary found object. What remains, are only fragments and remnants that represent something lost or erased in their discarded debris. In addition to photos and video, a 10 x 18 foot artifact painting was also created by documenting the piano remnants as the performance progressed throughout the day.

More information can be found about the original performance here:

  • @eyeddarras - Good point.

The piano was destined for the dumpster the following Monday.

We gave it a second life.

  • but try fucking fun? stupid idiots!

  • In many US school districts the music programs are the first to be cut. In other nations, children are lucky to get to go to school, much less find an instrument there.

Meanwhile in Williamsburg, a bunch of white people destroy a piano.
