Ah.....Paris ...... That city with it's atmosphere of "je ne sais quoi" ;-) The Eiffeltower, the river Seine, the avenue des Champs Elysées and .....Montmartre. The part of the city that has always inspired artists from all over the world...... One of these artists was legendary composer Cole Porter. Inspired by the "naughtyness" of the area (as he described it himself) he wrote the musical "Can-Can" in 1953. It ran for over two years starting from 1953 and the West End production of 1954 also was a huge success.
Then in 1960, a film was made under the same name, starring Shirley MacLaine, Frank Sinatra and Maurice Chevalier. Nelson Riddle was appointed musical director and re-arranged some of the original songs. He also re-arranged the songs for dancing and consequently, an album was released in that same year.
Riddle, who started to play the piano age 8, and who worked with the biggest names in the music business (Sinatra, Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Mathis, etc...) clearly demonstrates his talent as a top arranger here with the smooth softly swingin" rendition of Cole Porter's songs.
From the 1960 album "Can-Can" here's Nelson Riddle taking you on a tour through that most charming part of Paris : Montmartre. Bon yoyage ;-) !

  • Good one Walter! This is a wonderful song and great arrangement; its certainly going in my favourites. Sometimes, when I get so excited at these old songs I think either I'm getting old or I was born too late. I prefer to think its the latter! ;-)

  • @mizoginwinter Exactly my feeling too sometimes and ......... I also prefer to think that "I was born too late" ;-) !

  • 550 views in 10 days, not bad, Walter! The next best of yours has taken a month to hit 500. Glad this one is so popular! But now I've got disco fever & that David Ruffin I sent you has become my latest feature, it's such a hopping, feel-good song. Produced & arranged for him by Van McCoy the very same year (1975) McCoy had his own monster hit with 'The Hustle'. McCoy was a greatly gifted musician who died only 4 years later of a heart attack at age 39. Yes, Walter, we should be thankful! chuck

  • @chkjns Glad "someone" is keeping track of the numbers ;-) ......I clearly remember "The Hustle" - it was one of (if not THE) best instrumental tunes of the seventies. It was a huge hit here in the Benelux too. And about "being thankful", .......here's a guy that can only say .... INDEED !! :)

  • Our musical taste is virtually identical, Walter, & it is my great honour to be your friend. My Nelson Riddle Playlist is up past 50 songs now & the Music of 1960 list has almost 100! Added this to both. 50 years ago, before radio became 'formatted', you'd hear an adult score like this perhaps followed by an Elvis number, & then a song by one of the numerous groups where vocal harmonies were superb. My playlists for every year since 1900 are just like that, with something for everyone. chuck

  • @chkjns Actually, the switch which I use most often when "listening" to the radio, is the "OFF" switch. The moments when you can listen to "real good music" ("our kind of music" let's say :) are scarce, not to say "non-existing". At least........ when you consider the 'traditional' broadcast stations (public radio here). Fortunately, there are some local radios here which play "our music". And luckily, the net also offers some great stations.

  • This is my current feature, Walter! It's just THAT good! Puzzled why our 2 prior comments do not display unless I click view all comments, & that makes the music stop. The knaves at youtube have been busy fouling things up again. I wonder if they spend their work breaks out in their parking lot putting sugar in each other's fuel tanks?

  • "Smooth, softly swinging"...... that's the apt description for this one... Thanks Walter.
