NOTE: This does NOT happen with emulators/ROMs! This only happens with bootleg cartridges!

More info here: http://earthboundcentral.com/2011/05/earthbounds-copy-protection/

EarthBound's programming was full of anti-piracy stuff. It would often check to see if the game was on a cartridge copier or on a pirate cartridge and then it'd do all kinds of stuff. This video is an example of one of the last checks it does in the game... and it's also one of the most evil things a designer could do. It's so bad it's genius. Anyway, check it out.

  • @PiraticOctopus they gain something out of it... they gain publicity. If a company does put out good things, you're much more likely to buy from them when you *do* have money. Or you talking about games you like on forums to have others try them out, and the like.

And usually, people who can buy stuff do... just because RIAA and the like are crooks they think everyone else is as well...

  • @YandMProductions That's exactly how I think as far as emulators go. They DON'T get anything (or LOSE anything) simply because I have "not enough cashoooooola" to buy a used copy from someone else. There is no other way for me to revel in the full glory of the series. Sorry, Nintendo.

  • @LightningRiderX Oh. Well, ok then.

  • Does anyone know if the real cartridge will play on clone systems without this happening?I have been playing it on my Supaboy and it doesn't seem like there are more enemies but I can't be certain.

  • @YandMProductions I'm specifically reffering to the bootleg version, if this was a ROM then the ap wouldn't be there

  • @YandMProductions So, EarthBound goes for thousands of dollars, but Nintendo still refuses to release it. (It's up to 4750 DP with apx. 3 hours left to bid.)

  • @TheNessEB WHAT!?!

Well, damn. Now the idea that Earthbound will be the gaming equivalent of Action Comics #1 seems more likely to me now.

  • @YandMProductions This cartage is going for 4,400 DP.

  • @LightningRiderX I could understand this comment when the game first came out, but how is it illegal and morally wrong now?

No new versions of the game have been released, any still on sale are rare and cost over $100(I'm not kidding) and even if you do buy it, the developers of the game don't get a single penny, which means you're not stealing from the developers.

  • how is this evil, you got the copy illegally and in a morally wrong manner
