http://www.visitgreece.gr | Once upon a time there was a most beautiful young woman, whom the Turks were after, seeking to make her their prisoner. As they closed in on her, she reached a dead end and it was then that she prayed to God to save her. A cave opened up in front of her, where she hid, with its entrance no longer being visible. Thus the name of the chapel, built near that spot, in Plomari, on the island of Lesvos, which was dedicated to the Holy Mother, the Hidden (Panaghia or Panagia Krifti). The chapel is near Melinta (Melinda) Beach, at a distance of 40 kilometers southwest of the town of Mytilini. Access from inland is difficult but the beauty of this beach is worth all your trouble. Check the surrounding rocks for the warm spa water that springs from them!
