Most traditional tennis teaching will tell you to swing low to high on the tennis forehand.

I am a big believer in swinging low to high on the tennis forehand when the situation calls for it.

The problem with swinging low to high on the tennis forehand is when you get pulled out wide.

It is going to be more natural for you to swing across your body on the tennis forehand on wider balls.

There are times when a player can step in on an out wide ball for the tennis forehand.

It is okay in that situation to swing low to high on the tennis forehand.

What happens when you do not have time to set your feet and step in on the tennis forehand?

This calls for the open stance footwork pattern with the tennis forehand.

Some players will find is easy to do the buggy whip on the tennis forehand while others will find it more comfortable to swing across the body on the tennis forehand.

Roger Federer is one of the best at swinging across his body on wide balls when it comes to his tennis forehand.

The key is to finish with space when you swing across the body.

Make sure the swing arm is not up against the body at the end of the tennis forehand.

Try catching the racquet away from the body to help create the space needed for this certain tennis forehand.

Next time you go out onto the court, try swinging across the body on the tennis forehand when you get pulled out wide.

Leave a comment and let me know if you agree with swinging across your body or if you should always go low to high on the tennis forehand.

  • Hey man, at what height should the ball be when making contact? and I always have trouble over running to the ball and jamming myself. Also, on a ball with a lot of top spin should i take it on the bounce or just back up further and catch it on the way down?

  • he looks like drew brees

  • Everytime I try to do this, the ball literally goes FLYING to the side. How can I improve this?

  • What he is doing is very close to a wind shield wiper forehand. it is nothing new

  • Is it more flat hitted or top spinned ? Just wondering because I'm looking to start hitting this way from from now on . Across my body rather than low to high .

  • the videos good..i was always wondering how to hit the ball low over the net with topspin..cheers Jeff

  • All very true ! - but just not-experienced-in-tennis people may get little confused.

(If you want deep ball to send from your base line spot - of course you need to finish up and not only across you body - unless you are high intermediate and advanced player where you hit in rising..).

  • Jeff, it looks good, but, I feel you do not provide enough specifics. Consider telling the student 1) how the racquet should be at contact and 2) WHY they should come across the body. I feel it is necessary to provide your rationale so the student understands specifically HOW to do it and WHY they are doing it that way. The forehand should be very replicable and without more specific, that is difficult.

  • hey guys check my forehand out on my channel and maybe give me some advice

  • There may be some other players who also had this technique prior to Rios - it is possible, as it has been a gradual evolution from the top of the game down to the bottom or the base of the pyramid I should say - as opposed to low to high!

  • Infact I'd like to correct myself. If you care to look at my channel (I'm not advertising it merely using it as a way to make a technical point) which is that even before the mighty Federer came along with the 'sling' forehand, Marcelo RIos had the technique down to a tee. There is some footage of him from the French Open 98 videos if you care to look. He had pure rotation. Surely he was one of the great innovators of the game at the highest level. A style developed all of his own.
