LYRICS BELOW - NORMAL PERSON (ADHD Blues) - Blues MAMA Original

This song is written from both Self and Parent viewpoint. I am, and have a child, diagnosed with ADHD - I also want to say that I am not "dissing" parents who have chosen that route. I am the parent of a child who needed meds. I still struggle with that decision everyday - wondering about long term effects on the brain and body. My child is better with medications, it's clear. So we do the best we can...right?

However, I don't think it's a "Disorder". I believe it's a way of being in the world. Before mankind invented all his technology, the villagers relied on "sensitives" to warn them when the lion was coming for dinner... Sensitives are people who perceive more than the "average range" of frequencies that most human beings are equipped to experience.

In spite of that firm belief, I think some people can benefit from medications - Life is often overcrowded, filled with too many sounds, movements, smells, etc. that can certainly overtax a sensitive nervous system. I see medications as playing the role of a sort of "armor" for sensitives. This song is not advice to stop taking meds, if you feel they benefit you.

It IS an expression of my experience as both an undiagnosed child, and adult with ADHD - as well as the parent of a child who was diagnosed early and had to go the route of medication. I know meds can help significantly. So only you can be the judge of what works in your life. If we need meds, by all means we take them...

I just feel that it's completely unnecessary to live with the stigma that being different can create. IF there is advice in this song; it's "Don't let anybody label you"... We don't! =o) If you are 'different' - celebrate with us!

The video became about documenting the experience both as a parent and an adult with ADHD. The prejudice, the anger, the stuffing of emotions, the misinterpreting of self worth, etc!

This song / video may be about ADHD on the surface, but in the heart of the song, it's for anyone, and everyone - who didn't fit in...who couldn't march to the beat of someone else's drum. Stay strong and know that you are beautiful and wise =o)

Enjoy this crazy 4-guitar live jam (via an ambient room mic...lol =o)

Normal Person (ADHD Blues)
lyrics

And Mother said, Be quiet...be quiet and sit still
You've got to be a normal person,so take your pills.
She only wants the best for you, so you do what mother tells you to

And Teacher said - I've had my fill of you...I've had my fill of you. You've got to be a normal person - take your pills, take your pills.

I don't want to take another pill...
I don't think that I am ill
I'm here to discover... recover my dreams...my will
I think we all should take a walk
into the quiet of the cool dark woods,
so very good for what assails you...

Too many satellites, keeping me awake at night
Bouncing micro rays right through my brain
Too much information can cause a body pain,
Steal my peace of mind, making me afraid
No I won't be quiet and I won't sit still,
I can't be a normal person because it made me ill

Oh yes it did now...because I took a pill,
And then another pill, and another pill
I think I've had my fill...I think I've had my fill.
And I won't be quiet - Oooohhh I won't sit still

Don't let them take your star, or tell you who you are.
Don't let them tell you what is wrong with you,
Don't you believe it! Only you can decide what's true
There's nothing wrong with you... there's nothing wrong with you

Every soul has a purpose, important work to do
Don't be a 'normal' person...Don't be a 'normal' person
Don't get in line, cause being you is just fine...
There's nothing wrong with you... there's nothing wrong with you...
