The best fiction writers are those who can craft characters and plots that are undeniably real, even though they are a product of the author's imagination. Richard Yates was one of those people.
As an English instructor, I must say this is one of my favorite books. It's full of human tragedy; it rips your heart out - which is the mark of great writer. Yates dialogue was used verbatim in the film. That doesn't happen very often. Thank you for writing this incredible exploration of the human spirit, Richard Yates. Your work resonates in my classroom.
...Really? France is arrogant and mediocre. They still think they're in the times where they had Napoleon leading them. They're more overrated than any Vincent Vaughn movie, it's a capital for self-centered yuppies who likes to pay more money for crappier products. It's a national embodiment of every superiority complex around. It have had nothing new to offer for the last 300 years, it's a bunch of ungrateful and xenophobic pricks. Now go back into your delusional hipsterverse...
@TheFacelessActivist Wow that's one of the most ignorant things i've ever read. Nobody speaks English? Can you speak French? Spanish? German? Arabic? When people who don't speak your language come to your country is it right for them to complain? Also Paris is one of the most vibrant diverse and ALIVE cities in the world. Maybe you just weren't looking in the right places, next time avoid the super touristy bits and look for the real city. Or go to Glasgow and get stabbed, your choice, cunt.
Ah, I'm sorry your highness, I suppose my ignorant simpleton mind couldn't take in the beauty of a self-inflated aristocratic nation souley based on trend-sucking snobs who would even eat their own shoes if it was recommended by the right magazines... Yes, because I am that blatantly stupid. It's not like I had a genuine impression since I'm too dumb to base a proper opinion in a country I visited. So no, I find their culture as tasteless as their edible swamp animals!
Blake Bailey (1:00) sounds like Chris Griffin.

@TheFacelessActivist with all due respect, I think Paris is pretty amazing. I can imagine how ignorant simpletons would disagree though.
