Back then the national speed limit was 55 mph, and I doubt the "racing scenes" we see were filmed much over that. The illusion of speed just ain't there.

Does anybody know who made the song at the beginning of the movie when Brian first picked up Hurricane? Hurricane says "Listen to that" and turns the volume up then starts playing his thumb like a sax. It goes, ba ba baw baw baw, ba ba baw baw baw, ba ba baw baw ba ba ba baw baw baw..., as far as I know those are the only lyrics. The song ends just as they pull onto town and park. This is one of my favorite movies, next to Corvette Summer and Two-Lane Blacktop!!!
