Enjoying a few rays of sunshine while playing my favorite rag "Heliotope Bouquet" by Scott Joplin and Louis Chauvin.
I couldn't find any other evidence for it but according to the Hollywood movie this rag was dictated by Louis Chauvin, in his deathbed, to Scott Joplin. Louis Chauvin was a famous ragtime 'professor' (pianoplayer) but didn't know how to write down music, hence the colaboration with Scott Joplin.

The beautiful delicacy of this rag shines through its slow pace - I think it cannot be played slow enough.
The title is exceptionally fitting if you know that Heliotrophe (a pink-purple tint) is among the handful of "half-mourning" colors worn by Victorians during the last stage of mourning. I really love the introspective and mournful character of this rag; that's also why I chose to play it on a nylon-string guitar (a Alhambra Crossover).

I learned the guitararrangement from an old Kicking Mule lp called "The Entertainer". Canadian guitarist Jim McLennan made the arrangement. John James also has a beautiful arrangement of it. It's not that hard to play and it suits the guitar well.
The lp has been reissued on cd and comes with a pdf tablaturebooklet for all the songs, at Stefan Grossman's Guitarworkshop.

  • Well done. I find it hard to play this kind of thing that slow.

  • @amccolgan1 it will come with age :-)

  • When I first watched this vid I knew that I would have to learn to play it. I have followed Daddy's link to Guitar Workshop and bought the CD. What a great buy! Not only the tabs for this tune but for six others as well, plus all the great tracks to listen to, and all for a tenner delivered. DaddyS you are a great inspiration to us aspiring guitar pickers!!
