  • We must remember, when Borodin wrote this there was no sound recording, and most performances of string quartets were a group of four friends (or maybe Mama and Papa and Magdeleh and little Boris) assembled in the parlor and sight-reading.

    Imagine Borodin himself on the cello in such an ensemble, maybe Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazounov on the violins....

  • It's enjoyable but, as I'm sure the players are well aware, there are intonation problems and occasional uncertainty.
