HON SHIRABE - TAJIMA TADASHI
Master of Shakuhachi - Basis for Enlightenment

Basis for Enlightenment

Hon shirabe is regarded as preparation for what will follow: it is the first piece learned by most shakuhachi players; it is often used to begin a ceremony, a concert, or even one's own practice time; and it is often associated with a naοve state of mind prior to "understanding, spiritual awakening, higher perception, and spiritual enlightenment". Thus, while not requiring any advanced playing techniques, "Hon shirabe" does nevertheless require of the player an ability to control his own mind, his own breathing, and the performance environment. In other words, the essence of this piece is simplicity of style and the condensation of beauty.

  • @LOVE2Flute Thanks JP this was so beautiful - My shakuhaichi playing isn't quite there... It's such a meditative, reflective instrument - I haven't yet found those quite spaces in my life, but I feel it coming... =o) Thank you

  • @LOVE2Flute Ditto JP thx 4 shaing!... so Shinto (way of the spirit)

Like a musical prayer mixed with visual Japanese symbolic architecture!

So full of meaning... with nature. ; )

  • I love how they furred out the roof panels to minimize natural decay or erosion from the two by fours that would normally allow the plywood panels to rest upon. Good idea!!!

  • Thank you JP, good share!!!
