The comeback does make sense at that time. Gay men were often called "fruits". As in; "He's a little light in the loafers you know, a real fruit." it was offensive. It would be like calling him a faggot today at a press conference. Real classy (ahem) lady.
I wish the pie had been full of razors but I believe life got her even better. :)
