Oak Park, IL Janurary 2011- Chicagoland hip-hop artists Sev Seveer (Troy Brundidge) and Defcee (Adam Levin) have teamed up to release The Promise, a five-song EP by high school-aged rappers A.B. and Baby G. The EP is the result of two months of songwriting and music production workshops led by Levin and Brundidge in Oak Park, IL, and the first in an ongoing collaboration to lead further workshops for troubled and/or under-performing high school youth.
In the face of their own adversity and an ever-increasing stigma toward hip-hop culture, Levin and Brundidge stress that their ultimate goal is to take what many see as a "troublesome" genre of music and use it to repair the lives of youths who have also been deemed too "troublesome" or "problematic" for parents or teachers to handle.
Upon hearing The Promise, Diane Wilson, counselor and author of the critically acclaimed book Back in Control, said she was moved by the honesty and grim reality described within the young artists' lyrics: "In an age where hip-hop struggles with becoming braggadocious and fictional, this project provided an outlet for the raw truth, tender inspiration and courage of kids whose stories must be heard to be understood."
In addition to leading the workshops, Levin and Brundidge played an integral part in the creative process. Brundidge produced the music using a midi controller drum machine in the same room where A.B. and Baby G were taking writing workshops led by Levin. Eventually the students were so inspired by Levin's lyrical prowess that they demanded he feature on The Promise as a third lead vocalist. The EPs detailed imagery reveals Oak Park from a teenaged perspective that few may know or care to understand. A.B, Baby G, and Defcee provide a unique middle-class frame of reference in a rap culture heavy with rags-to-riches tales. The Promise releases to CDBaby/iTunes on January 16th.
