If Georgia had supported Chechnya, they would have recognized their independence, or lobbied for some far away safe country, from Russia, like Oman, to recognize it.

Chechnya should have had independence, but they weren't being recognized by any other states: the number one reason is terrorism. The Chechen government was allowing several terrorist groups to operate on Chechen soil, and those terrorists were attacking MEDICAL WORKERS and OTHER FOREIGN AID GROUPS.

Peace Russia! Russia needs support.

It was OK not to give independence to Chechnya after all - because the Chechen government was truly providing a haven for international terrorists.

If Chechnya had had a decent government, that wasn't supporting the instigation of a global war between Islam and everybody else, I believe that eventually, after a decade or two, they would have had recognized independence. Instead, they launch terrorism, and force Russia to attack them.

I honestly don't understand why you won't condemn Mashadov for allowing Basaev and ibn Khattab to establish bases and carry out independent operations - of Mashadov himself wasn't involved. Frankly it's clear that the Chechen leaders sacrificed Chechnya future for some kind of "jihad/paradise/global islamic/revenge" reason. If they had wanted Chechen indepedence, they wouldn't have launched those terrorist attacks in 1998, or invaded Dagestan. They acted for a WAR, not INDEPENDENCE.
