However, the solution certainly cannot be to shut down successful schools educating the same population and creating a brighter future for future generations. It simply cannot be the answer either. Meanwhile, if this "bandaid" solution (charter schools), is producing fruit, I say we keep it until the DOE and UFT can actually turn around our failing schools.

I was at the rally as a supporter of one of the charter schools. We were not tricked, we are very well informed by our network as to the situation and the grave ramifications to such a lawsuit. Also, many of your facts are quite skewed. I do believe that this situation is not the best, having 2 schools, regardless of charter or public, co-locating.

The admissions policy is not the same as a PS. The zoning laws don't apply to charter schools that were authorized pre May 28, 2010. They don't score tests the same way as public schools. There is too much difference between a charter school and public school. A charter school could have 20 kids in a full size classroom. If a public school had that many, the DOE would deem that to be underutilized. GIVING CSs PS SPACE IS TAKING AWAY FROM PS CHILDREN. That's what all the fuss is about.

First of all, many of these parents were tricked into coming to this staged rally. They were told not to take their children to school and to meet at the state office building on 125th but not told why. Secondly, although charter schools are 90% plus funded with public dollars and public schools get 100%, charter school funding doesn't include facilities and public schools do. That funding calculates to 40%. If CSs get public space for free they are getting more funding than a traditional PS.
