[From "Kovacs Corner" on YouTube.com] - Camelot just started...The Cuban Missile Crisis was only a few months away...It was the dawn of the sixties! This was the CBS Network's half hour promotional rollout of their 1961 fall schedule. Some shows and personalities you know well, others you never knew existed. Sit back and reminisce.

  • Bess didn't even last the entire 1966-'67 season; she had a falling out with Funt, and walked out in early '67. Guest co-hosts filled in for her until the season (and series) ended.

Durward Kirby COULDN'T have appeared on "THE TODAY SHOW" at the same time he was Garry's announcer on his CBS daytime show...that was indeed Jack Lescoulie (only he "crossed over" as Jackie Gleason's prime-time announcer on CBS).

  • @fromthesidelines I was trying to be "diplomatic" in my response. I knew that Kirby wasn't on the Today Show. ;-)

  • BTW, Wikipedia lists the following ladies as "Today Girls": Estelle Parsons (official title: "Women's Editor") (19521955) Lee Meriwether (19551956)

    Helen O'Connell (19561958) Betsy Palmer (1958) Florence Henderson (19591960; co-hosted Later Today in 1999) Beryl Pfizer (19601961)

Robbin Bain (1961) Louise King (1962)

    Pat Fontaine (19631964) Maureen O'Sullivan (1964) Barbara Walters (1964)

  • Derwood Kirby also did the Early "Today" shows with Dave Garroway live from New York. Zippy the chimp was a regular.

  • "J. Fred Muggs" was the chimp on Garroway's "Today Show". Since Durwood Kirby had a contract with CBS, I doubt (especially in Bill Paley's era) that he would be appearing on NBC. You are probably referring to Jack Lescoulie.

  • Derwood Kirby...what, exactly, did he have going for him?

  • He had an announcer's voice and a dignified type of TV personna. Remember, the start of the sixties was all white bread and vanilla ice cream!

  • These shows bring back some good memories from my childhood.

  • Does anyone know how many episodes Window on Main Street lasted? Some sources say 32 episodes, while others say 13.

  • Oh, man...this is GOOD stuff!...

  • Thanks, 'rolko'! I appreciate your information, too...

  • Aha. Was wondering about that. Yet "I've Got a Secret" (of which Miss Myerson was a regular since 1959, and on which she stayed for the rest of its run) ended five months sooner than "Candid Camera," which along with "What's My Line?" aired for the last time on CBS on Sept. 3, 1967.

  • Yet, the one season Miss Myerson did "Candid Camera," was the one which was its last, as CBS cancelled that show, along with "What's My Line?," "I've Got a Secret," and the weekly nighttime "To Tell the Truth," in 1967. One can only guess whether Bess would have lasted past that one season if CBS didn't pull the plug on "Candid Camera."

Ironically, Bess' old "IGAS" panel-mate, Betsy Palmer, was later a "Candid Camera" co-host in its 1970's syndicated run - yet she didn't last that long, either.
