Government schools are only "free" because the government TAXES ITS CITIZENS to fund them. Hello? Why should Catholic universities be free? You can choose to pay and attend or not at all.

The Catholic Church liberally provides assistence to those in need - you're not required to attend a church or a university. They are freely handed out. It's in Catholic theology. And if you're starving, you're going to complain because the Church then has a flyer or two on Jesus Christ? Are you kidding?

There's plenty of errors in your comment:

1) Indulgences weren't invented. They existed since the beginning of the Catholic Church. If you read history, you'll know that Tetzel (look him up) abused indulgences by scaring people into buying them. The whole concept was supposed to be that you would receive an indulgence for a sincere donation to the Church, Corruption doesn't invalidate doctrine.

2) If the Catholic Church wasn't wealthy, how do you think they could fund charity?
