Entertainment reporter Tim Estiloz profiles the unbelievable true story of how "comic books" were literally banned and burned in 1950's America. Author David Hajdu - tells in his critically acclaimed book, "The Ten Cent Scare: The Great Comic Book Scare and How It Changed America"... how comic books were seen as a dangerous tool that corrupted America's youth. Congress even held hearings into the evils of comic books. This is a fascinating little known story ... that resonates today.

This interview was conducted and produced by Tim Estiloz. It originally aired on the entertainment news TV program, "Backstage" - seen on CN8 The Comcast Network.

  • I was born in 1956 (wish me happy birthday, April 20th I'll be... er, er, never mind lol), and I loved comics as a child, and, of course, I still love them today. But I remember well how I was discouraged by adults and warned against comics in those days, as a result of the scare of the 1950s. Of course, this just made me want to read them more! Once, my stepdad threw all my comics in the trash can. I soon dug them out and hid them in a closet! True story.

  • Thanks so much for sharing your story. I hope you kept some of those books! :-)

  • kind of like hitlers bonfires

  • Those idiots back in the 50's were crazy. You see, that's why the rest of the world hates people who don't mind their own business.

They go crazy over something that's really small and made it into a big deal. Poor EC Comics was forever marred.
