F/A-18 Super Hornet dirty takeoff | Super-Slow Motion!

The F-18 Super Hornet takes off with afterburners and goes inverted, leaves landing gear extended. Filmed at 600 frames per second.
- I used a maxium optical zoom of 12x. When filming in high speed, the camera controls (focus, zoom, etc) are locked
so I had to guess a little at the settings. Despite a little trouble keeping the jet in frame, I somehow kept most it in there. If you've ever tried to film and track something fast holding a camera in your hands, you know how hard it can be when zoomed in.

The jet is awesome, no doubt... but that bird that flew across the screen from 0:36 to 0:43 was pretty darn cool too! :P

@wharbio Try keeping a 300+mph jet in frame with a 12x zoom from 1/2 mile away and then post it as a video response if you can do better.

I saw the CAF F18 display jet practice this at Cold Lake, Alberta. One of the most impressive a/c I've ever seen. As this camera is looking up with just sky in the background, it doesn't do the F-18 justice and show how very low it went inverted. The CAF F18 looked like it did a dirty roll as soon as it left the ground.

I wonder if the pilot noticed that bird? I'm sure he would have if he had hit it!

You know, it's kind of funny how people ooh and ahh and clap pilots on the back for pulling off daring stunts like this...until he crashes, and then suddenly he was a reckless maniac and the brass should be reprimanded for allowing him to fly expensive aircraft in such a dangerous manner. Oh well, it's a good thing mostly they don't crash.
