Before being elected to Congress in 2002, Rep. Steve King served in the Iowa Senate, where he fought tirelessly to make English the official language of the state. In 2001, Kings goal was realized as the Iowa legislature passed the Iowa English Language Reaffirmation Act, later signed into law by the governor.

In 2006, it was found that then Secretary of State Chet Culver was violating the law by offering voter registration forms in languages other than English. That November, U.S. English joined Rep. King and several Iowa citizens in suing the Secretary of States office to stop the practice. Earlier this year, an Iowa District Court Judge ruled that the secretary of states actions did violate Iowas official English law.

U.S. English representatives recently sat down with Rep. King to discuss this successful lawsuit and the importance of protecting the intent of official English legislation.
