Does a Christian need to belong to a church?

I dont wish to cause a debate on this issue. However I personally consider myself a Christian but do not attend church. The reason for this is I actually feel I have developed a closer connection to God by getting to know him through prayer + contemplation rather than a paster/rev/priest's interpretation. Im not saying that people dont benefit from church, nor am i suggesting that people shouldnt go to church. Just that i dont think it makes me less of a Christian for making the choice not too.

Why don't you go to the Episcopal church, if it is not too liberal?!

There are two sections of the lutheran church in america, the LCMS and the liberal ELCA. I would go to church, but the only lutheran church in my area is an ELCA church.

RandlesBear: I myself grew first by reading the Bible and recognizing God's awesome love in my life. The Holy Spirit once told me, "There are 400 like you, who left the churches, but have always been with me. They will come up at this time and begin to speak." (something like that.) Later, I heard Daniel Rodes say the same thing, but 4,000 people, not in churches coming up to speak boldly for the Lord. Recently, the Holy Spirit sent me to encourage a barrista. She had heard the same.

This is a good lesson. the speaker obviously knows the Bible and has experience with Christian gatherings. I would add to this lesson by pointing out that on can also avoid be a "lone ranger Christian" by forming friendships and prayer groups with other believers, as in the early church during the time of the apostles.

When you mentioned Jesus as being our brother, it sounded very mormon. How is Jesus our brother? Because He dwelt among us ?
