In this clip, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner acknowledges that the best pro-growth tax reform would be to lower rates and simplify the tax code. He then struggles to defend the President's budget, which increases tax rates and adds complexity to the code. At one point, Secretary Geithner tries to argue that the ugly tax policies included in the President's budget might serve as a "motivator" for action for better policies. In other words: Our policies are so repellent that maybe they'll help convince Congress to do the opposite. Well, consider us convinced. But Secretary Geithner might have a tougher job convincing President Obama, who is currently traveling the country telling Americans that raising tax rates and putting more junk in the tax code really is the best idea for America.
