One of the greatest jazz-divas, Carmen McRae (1920-94), is unforgettable to all those who heard her in person and an inspiration to those who listen to her recordings. ("It was her behind-the-beat phrasing and her ironic interpretations of song lyrics that made her memorable." Wikipedia)
Singing with one of the great jazz vocalists (a male preferably with a female and vice versa) is an enticing challenge made possible by technical recording advances. But not all jazz vocalists (Bessie Smith, e.g.) give space for "snuggling in" another voice.
