Police are useless .. They don't prevent crimes. They just show up afterward and try to convince you not to make out a report so that crimes stats appear low and their precinct looks good and so the commissioner doesn't re-assign anyone for making him look bad. They enhance this illusion by making false arrests to imply that they are to thank for the decline in crime. It really does work this way, at least in large cities.
