Andrew Lloyd Webber ``Sunset Boulevard´´

With One Look
Song Version by: Barbara Streisand

They don't want me any more
They all say I'm through
Well it's time they knew

With on look
I can break your heart
With one look
I play every part
I can make your sad heart sing
With one look you'll know
All you need to know

With one smile
I'm the girl next door
Or the love that you've hungered for
When I speak it's with my soul
I can play any role

No words can tell
The stories my eyes tell
Watch me when I frown
You can't write that down
You know I'm right
It's there in black and white
When I look your way
You'll hear what I say

Yes, with one look
I put words to shame
Just one look
Sets the screen aflame
Silent music starts to play
One tear from my eye
Makes the whole world cry

With one look
They'll forgive the past
They'll rejoice I've returned at last
To my people in the dark
Still out there in the dark

(instruments)

Silent music starts to play
With one look you'll know
All you need to know

With one look
I'll ignite a blaze
I'll return to my glory days
They'll say Norma's back at last

This time I'm staying
I'm staying for good
I'll be back
Where I was born to be
With one look
I'll be me

  • No I believe Stephen Sondheim is the best....he can't be beat.

  • I don't know what all you hambones are talking about. All of the composers and lyricists you are talking about are wonderful- there is no such thing as 'best.' Thank Goodness for all of them. Streisand, on the other hand, is another story. She is the best interpreter of theatre, film, and American popular song standards ever. Is anyone listening to her performance on this song instead of arguing?

  • Listen! They are all Bros; Sondheim, Webber, Schwartz, Sheik, RH, Menken, Kander, JRB, all of them! Each and every one of them is a bro.

  • @MandeeSparkle 'Spectacle Shows'? Phantom's crashing chandelier is highly theatrical rather than a 'spectacle'. The Cats set was small but a great concept. Joseph, Whistle & The Beautiful Game were very simply staged. By Jeeves virtually had no set at all, same with the recent revival of Sunset. Starlight is the only true 'spectacle show' I would associate with ALW - maybe the original Sunset with its 'split screen'. But even then, the songs were so big, even the staircase got small...!

  • @GoodbyeToBlueberyPie Sondheim can at times be dull and repetitive - he has had as many dud songs as Lloyd Webber. Both have been the best at the job in the last few decades but have very different takes on structure and audience. I'd say that Lloyd Webber takes far more risks and has covered far more styles of music, but that Sondheim has a 'classier' finish to his best tunes.

  • @GoodbyeToBlueberyPie It's always been said that Lloyd Webber would have given anything for Sondheim's respect and critical acclaim while Sondhiem would have loved to have just a fraction of Lloyd Webber's commercial success. You couldn't find two composers more completely different but great in their own right. They're really apples and oranges.

  • Will be working on this song in my vocal lessons. Wish me luck.

  • Will everyone quit bitching about " oh, no, he's the best, no, He is!"? Please. you're all giving me a musical migraine AND scaring off newcomers to the genre who may have been hooked in by Andrew or one of the others. Look, they are all the best at what they do. Sondheim at uniqueness up to and including musicals about cannibalistic mass murderers, R&H at making instant classics that never get old, and AWL at spectacle shows that grab your attention and are terribly catchy. let it go!

  • Ms Streisand's performance of this song is so disappointing. There are so many more versions that emote far more successfully .....try Debra Byrne, Elaine Paige or Petula Clark. A little humility works wonders here ...

  • , Bravo, Barbara

  • @puterboy1 best comment ever

  • This would make a good SawyerxWinter song for Dolphin Tale
