Daling-daling dances originate from the Tausugs of the Philippines but was called mengalai or menilok. It is similar to the dances of the local tribes in south East Asia from the Philippines to Sumatra. Daling-daling is a musical song sung in Suluk about a traveller to Sandakan but now popularised by Bajaus in Semporna, and later adopted to the present version in Sandakan. A pre World War II dancer, disliked the present version because of too much hip and breast movements but discounted Igal-igal of Semporna as not elegant as the original mengilok because the hip does not move at all. Daling-dalaing is sung originally in Suluk but the Ubian had claimed it to be theirs.
