Eastern European Knitting - The Knit Stitch

A demonstration of Eastern European Knitting, the knit stitch. Please note, this is not continental knitting, as here we knit through the back of the loop in both the knit and purl stitch. The resulting fabric appears exactly the same as both English and Continental knitting styles.

When I was knitting while waiting to have a mammogram a Ukrainian woman showed me this method. She spoke very little English, and I don't speak Ukrainian, but we both spoke yarn! It was interesting, but I didn't have enough time to get the hang of it, I did write down the name and address of a LYS for her.

@jodijuice94 Hmmmm, no, I don't think so. This is just one method of knitting; the end result is the same as English style and Continental style.

Her stitches are facing the other way so if she reads an instruction to knit in the back loop she needs to knit in the FRONT one.

There's more than one way to skin a cat, and to knit too!

Hahaha, I know how you feel! I've seen old ladies staring at me, trying to figure out how the hell I'm making those stitches. Usually they come to the conclusion that I'm left-handed or something!

Hey, if the fabric comes out the same then what's the difference?? It's all knitting!

Thank you for teaching me to knit this way. Your instructions are straight to the point, no chatter, and a slow enough pace close up so we can see exactly what you are doing. Excellent! I've been knitting this way since July and it's my preferred method, and it's so much faster than other styles of knitting. :-)

Finally I have found some people out in this world who knit the same style as me, the only difference is when you pick up yarn it is wrapped at the top of the needle moving up where I pick up the working yarn on the bottom. I tried the continental way and kept reverting back to this same style in your video. I am self taught by looking at books, and asked someone how to knit and they showed me your knit technique. It took me less than 3 minutes to learn how to knit. Thank you loads for posting.

I've been wanting to try this ever since I heard it's supposed to speed up your knitting. But gosh, it's like learning to knit all over again. ^^ The toughest part for me is the tensioning very close to the needle, as I'm used to keep my left index finger a good two inches away from the tip.

But already, after 5 minutes of practise, am I getting a hunch that this really might be the fastest way. Thank you so much for your clear videos!!!

I just taught myself the basic knit stitch today and after getting severely frustrated with the continental style, I discovered i could knit the way you are now and notice no difference but was so worried i was somehow doing it "wrong" but now i'm glad i'm just doing it differently!

Cool! Thanks for showing the Eastern knit in this video and Eastern purl in your other video. I have tag it in my Delicious account & will definitely give the this style a try. I know it will help tighten my knitting when I pick the yarn from my left hand.
