Nydia Flores, a school psychologist at Allen-Field Elementary, is the June winner of the Excellence in Education Award.

The award is presented each month to recognize excellence, achievement, and innovation that can serve as an example to Milwaukee Public Schools and the community.

From the Board write-up about Ms. Flores.

During her career in Milwaukee Public Schools, Ms. Flores has always been involved with students and their families beyond the regular school day. She was instrumental in collaborating with UW-Madison to start a bilingual FAST (Family And School Together) program at Allen-Field. She holds an evening informational session at the beginning and end of each school year: The first informational session focuses on study habits and discipline, and the second session addresses safety issues as families prepare for summer vacation. Also, Ms. Flores was instrumental in bringing the bilingual version of a program for parents called "It's Time to Change the Conversation About Depression" to Allen-Field and other schools in the district. She has trained many bilingual parent coordinators to ensure increased access to this valuable program.

In addition to the many supportive programs which she has implemented at Allen-Field, Ms. Flores has always gone out of her way to make the holidays extra special for her students and their families. Every year, she organizes and distributes 50 Thanksgiving Baskets for families at Allen-Field. A complete Thanksgiving dinner is provided through monetary donations from a private company and food items donated by staff members. Before winter recess, Ms. Flores organizes the Giving Tree activity through which she asks 75 students selected by their teachers what gifts they would like to receive for the winter holiday. With donations from staff and community members, the children's parents are given the presents to share with the children on the holiday.
