Over a six-month time span, Kamala and Nysis developed a trusting professional relationship, and she was granted access to film his friends, family, home, and personal and professional life gaining a unique perspective with which to observe the social, cultural and professional influences affecting him. Kamala began capturing those influences, recording with digital video, using a minimalist aesthetic including natural lighting, shooting in the street or car to capture the space of Nysis's environment and surroundings, and through dialogue about his childhood, and past and present circumstances. The project's style reflects the rawness associated with "real" or authentic Hip Hop and reveals an intimate look at what it really means to be a product of Hip Hop culture, while exploring the nearly impossible chance of becoming a Hip Hop star.
The project's use of interviews with many recognizable characters associated with Hip Hop creates a broad reaching context that results in a dynamic point of view: one that oscillates back and forth between a controversial discussion that seeks to define and deconstruct Hip Hop, and Nysis's purely personal point of view as he struggles to make a place for himself within Hip Hop. Each aspect adds dimension and insight into the other providing the audience with an opportunity to identify with Nysis as a reflection of reality amidst the more theoretical conversation about what Hip Hop really is, and the power and potential Hip Hop has in representing and addressing the cultural divisions, as well as the political and economic stratification within the African-American community.
The project employs music, and lyrics to drive the pacing and add an aesthetic dimension that works to connect and magnify the story and conversation.
