Sea Kayak Paddling through locks at Charles River to Boston Harbor

WARNING: This video, recorded off season in November 2011 makes transiting a lock look deceptively easy. Waters are calm because of timing with Boston Harbor tides. The locks are often difficult to transit even for boaters, a number often unable to negotiate position or navigate through the strong currents. Each boating season, a few boats lose control, banging other boats or lock walls.

In other words, transiting the Charles River Locks is not for beginning paddlers, and can be treacherous if busy with boat traffic.

Suggestion: Bring an airhorn to get the attention of the lock superintendent or operator. Note the operator in the glass overpass while you enter the lock.
