I forgot, the sheraton Motel was built in in 1971.

I grew up in Gary during the 50's and 60's. It was a growing town. White flight takes the reason why Gary is in such bad shape but what about the decline of the workforce, the crime rate rose during then and people did not want to live like that. people did not want to take care of the city so everyone is to blame but the lazy people not wanting to keep it up. Glad I Live in Indy now.

So glad that Gary has an administration in place that will dispel the myths and quiet the naysayers!

I am completely astounded at how one sided this video is, YES we have problems in Gary just like EVERY urban city our size is having but really you didn't even show the historical neighborhoods that are still beautiful, you show a church that has been closed since I was a child and I am 43 but not show some of the beautiful churches that are still open & THRIVING. This is media sensationalism that won''t help our city but only cause it to be thought of as a national menace. SHAME ON YOU.

I was moved by both this video, and the hopes of the people who have left comments.

I would love to renovate homes in gary, but I cant, they rip the copper out of the wall, tear off the gutters, steel the furnace and hot water heater. It is very sad that you cant invest for fear of thieves

This is a bullshit story, now tell the real reason gary is in ruins!

i will always love my hometown...but sadly it is falling apart. if downtown was live like it was back then, hotels reopened, stores, shops & a lot more choices of eatery than chicken joints, maybe gary will have a chance. but where does all that money go for a city that desperately needs reconstruction? i think i have a clue...

They NEVER mention the white flight that took place in Gary during the 60's after Mayor Hatcher was elected. The decline of US Steel hurt the city, but racism destroyed it. NEVER FORGET THAT!

Cont: Chicago's crime rate is far worst than Gary and I refuse to live there while they rob you blind on their EXTREMELY high state taxes and high housing. Our new Mayor Karen is already making changes in the city that I can see and she has only been in office a cpl months. I believe Gary will be revamped but it will take some time. I also agree that most crime occurs w/ppl who are in gangs or doing illegal activity, if you are on the straight & narrow the chances of you being harmed r slim.
That's my hometown, so sad...living there only exposed me to hard times, but didn't prepare me for them

Born and raised there. It has aways looked like that. Even when the still mill was that place to work. Most of down town has always been boarded up.. That hotel has been looking like that since the 80's. Glen park use to be the nice park of Gary now it has went to hell. Most of the schools are closed to. I would never move back.
