Apple Valley recreators can now imbibe in beer and wine at all parks without obtaining a special permit.
The Apple Valley City Council approved an amendment to its policy governing alcohol use in city parks 4-1, Councilmember Ruth Grendahl dissenting.
Persons 21 and older can consume 3.2 malt liquor, beer and wine without party permit in all 49 parks. Hard liquor is banned from all parks.
Previously, Alimagnet Park in western Apple Valley was the only city park to require a party permit for any alcohol consumption, including 3.2 malt liquor, beer, wine and hard liquor. Other parks allowed 3.2 malt liquor and beer without a party permit, but required permits for wine and hard liquor.
Some council members voting in favor of the change said it would actually be more restrictive than current rules since it would prohibit hard liquor all together.
Grendahl, however, said the idea of loosing regulations at Alimagnet Park the source of numerous complaints by neighbors was appalling.
She made a motion to prohibit all alcohol in all parks except by permit. The motion failed with all but Grendahl voting in opposition.
