This is a beautiful, melodic piece composed by Venezuelan composer and guitarist Alfonso Montes. I learned it through watching Per-Olov playing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2wsH7Guz_M. I do not have the tab, therefore my playing is not precise. Per-Olov plays way better than me...

For the recording: I played on my Pavan TP-30 Spruce top guitar and the piece was recorded with AKG Perception 420 + TubeMP Project Series USB mic preamp. Thanks for watching!

  • I have a quick question about your mic: Are you using the Perception 420 on the cardioid pattern? I'm hearing a lot of ambient noise in your videos and if that's what the cardioid is like, it's discouraging me from buying the mic.

  • It's cardioid. To be fair I have to say that the noise mostly came from the pre-amp, as I boosted the signal to maximal level (my play was somehow gentle).

  • Very interesting. Maybe I shouldn't worry so much about a shorter scale then. Thanks for the info. And by the way, are you satisfied with the guitar you got from TP? I'm seriously considering a Pavan TP 30 although I wish I'd considered one sooner since it appears he just raised his prices by a few hundred $. I thought I'd get the cedar because of it's warmer sound, but your guitar sure sounds sweet so I'm having 2nd thoughts there.

  • Yeah I like my TP-30, and IMO even if he raised his prices the TP-30 will still worth the money, as the guitar on the market with similar sound quality will surely worth $2,000-3,000. For my spruce top TP-30, it is bright, but also very melodic. I have not tried cedar top yet as I prefer a brighter sound; but I think you can find audio clips on Tom's website.

  • Thanks for the response Classical101. Reason I asked was I've always played a 650 scale, but there is a trend toward shorter scale guitars. I've read that if you spread your hand open as far as you can, and the spread between your thumb and little finger is less than 9 in. you'd feel more comfortable with a shorter scale. I can only reach 8.5 inches, so maybe all these years I've been strugglng for nothing.

  • Maybe you are right, but in fact my spread is only 8 inches and this is 0.5 inch shorter than yours, and I have no problem in playing 'normal' pieces on a 650 mm scale guitar. Moreover, one advantage a 650 mm guitar has over a 640 mm one is the sound. The longer scale will certainly make your sound more projecting (as you know Ramirez 1A has a 663 mm scale). Anyway, this is my personal opinion. Hope you will find a guitar you like.

  • Thank you- The Pavan I have is TP30 with standard 650mm scale. If I remember correctly Tom said he no longer provides TP30 640 - maybe I am wrong. But 650 mm scale is pretty comfortable for me.

  • very impressive. And you have it memorized! I struggle to memorize much shorter pieces than that one. The Pavan sounds fantastic. Is it the TP 30-64 or the TP 30 with the standard 650 mm scale?

  • Thanks a lot for the nice comments~ I think the noise is likely caused by the preamp. I tried to boost up the preamp to get louder sounds. I should probably use more finger strength instead~

  • Beautifully soothing! Thank you!

    P.S.

Good sound quality, but it seems that your recording equipment also picks up some ambient noise; the AC maybe...
