The original Kingston Trio of Bob Shane, Dave Guard, and Nick Reynolds play a late 1950s update of a 19th century Norwegian-American folk-styled song by Ditmar Meidell. Meidell's original was a commentary on an attempt to create a New World Utopia by Norwegian visionary Ole Bull. The colony failed, but Bull's vision of freedom and prosperity lived on in both Norwegian and English in this song.

The KT version here takes only the chorus from the original. Composers Harvey Geller and Mark Seligson tried to create an amusing comment in the lyric based on topical events in the 1950s.

This song appeared on the Trio's third studio album "Here We Go Again", which like the two LPs before it and the two after it hit the #1 spot on the Billboard charts for an extended period, in this case twelve weeks.

  • I had this on Album 'Here We Go Again', and there is a song on the vinyl that was not carried over to the DVD compilation, It was a Hawaiian song that started with an E. My vinyl was destroyed in a fire and I could not get back the whole album. I hate it when they decide to drop a song to make it 'fit' and it was your favorite.

  • @kenalepha - Hi kena: I hate that too. The song was "E Ino Tatou E" and it was on the Collector's Choice CD "twofer" - "Here We Go Again" with "At Large," in many people's opinion their two best of the original group's 25 albums. However - with really basic computer skills and a little money, you can get the album back. Amazon has the whole album for 6.99 and that one song for .89. Go to Amazon mp3 Store, search for Kingston Trio Here we go again. It will pop right up.
