'Introduction to Bizarro Wiz'

Collette Blanchard Gallery is pleased to announce their participation in the 2009 NADA Art Fair featuring artist Derrick Adams. Mr. Adams will also present a performance piece at the Le Jardin Theater at the Deauville Beach Resort. The performance, like the works in Adams' booth, is inspired by the fantastical, seriocomic, and mystical "Land of Oz" as depicted in 1978's "The Wiz". The performance will include a short video, produced in collaboration with artist Ramon Silva, which portrays the artist in the role of the terrorizing and omniscient Wiz. The second part of the work will be a live performance of lights, sound, and movement with performers reinterpreting the "Emerald City" dance from "The Wiz" in a black, gray and white color scheme.

For his presentation at the Collette Blanchard Gallery booth there wlill be new paintings on paper and two performances. Sitting in a cubicle-like structure filled with The Wiz's mementos and enclosed by a curtain, the Wiz will read passages from literature, engage in fragmented/one-sided dialogue, and play a sound-board of spellbinding sounds. Through his performances, Adams will portray the powerful, yet sad, role of the oracle that is The Wiz; a character who is omniscient and prophetic but whose wisdom oftentimes is not heeded, heard, or understood.


A graduate of Columbia University, Derrick has participated in PERFORMA, and shown at Greater New York, PS1 Museum, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Triple Candie, and the Studio Museum. Mr. Adams was most recently invited to participate in the Fountainhead Residency, his first solo exhibition with Collette Blanchard Gallery will be in January 2010.
