Team Masten made their first official attempt for Level One of the Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge on Sep 16, 2009, making them just the third team to ever do so. Xombie (their rocket vehicle) remained in the air for 93 seconds, surpassing the required 90 seconds flight time for Level One. However, upon inspection of the vehicle after landing, Team Masten noticed a leak in the engine chamber. Rather than risk losing the vehicle, they decided to call it a day and will try again in their October windows. Their next attempt is scheduled for October 7-8, 2009. • @majorGeek1971 Nope. they are based on the dynamics of air!

  • @filipebr20 Doesnt work in space

  • Do they have parachutes?

  • What's an Isp on this this engine?

  • Wow, it performed flawlessly.

  • kool

  • that is so cool i hope you win the competition just getting this far is an amazing feat in itself

  • Nice jobs and congrats to Masten Space!

  • The engine runs slightly rich as most regenerative cooling engines are run. Stoichiometric or a lean mixture would melt the chamber. Shock diamonds are normal as the flow is supersonic.

  • No, unless they use oxygen tanks but then that defeats the purpose
