International Folkboat sailing in San Francisco. Sometimes with a trapeze - just for fun.

10 points if you can guess the sound track.

  • That was awesome!!! Vincent7520 you need to lighten up, tuck in a reef.

  • PS. Plus a 45° heel is absolutely inefficient on any boat shape because 45° is not static : she will heel at 45/50° sometimes and the wind will spill from the top of the sail (as you said) and the benefit (if any) will be lost …

Making a boat go faster than her designed speed is also counter productive : she labours on the water as at 1.21.

Then an overcanvassed boat means the sail looses its initial shape very fast : takes only once done to ruin it.

My lessons were hard learned since 1961

  • As for capsize : sure the boat will right itself … according to the spilling of the top of the theory.

Practically it is mostly true too. It's good yo have lead under the boat. Unless when knocked flat you hatch board jumps off and the boat fills instantly. Happened more than once ; that's why having the hatch board attached to a lanyard is good recommendation on hatches with a "v" shape opening.

  • "obviously", being a 20 years owner of a long keeler I know the debate between higher speed thru waterline increase and loss of efficiency because the boat is not in her initial waterline is unending. To my experience through many rough passages with long keelers strain on the boat structure is permanent with such handling : I never saw a long keeler equipped with a trapeze. : sez it all !…

  • @vincent7520 - I'm sorry, but you clearly know nothing of sailing long keelers, such as the folkboat. When beating they are heeled over at 30-45 degrees. It increases the waterline length + you go faster, with the gunwales awash and the spray getting knocked up by the bucking bow. Over 50% of her mass is in the keel, you're not going to capsize without the help of a breaking wave. If knocked flat, the wind just spills over the top of the sails, and then you stand up again and continue...

  • on 1.21 she's close to capsize : if the hatch board is opened she's bound to fill and sink very fast …

yes, a real lack of seamanship…

  • Holy shit !… music is a real anticlimax.

Also the way this boat is sailed shows gross lack of seamanship : she's obviously overcanvassed and although the Foalkboat showed it can safely sail bluewater she's not designed to bear such strain and pretty soon the hull will suffer heavy damage.

If you want to sailboard or surf go to Santa Cruz… It's only 50 miles south by car.

The whole clip shows a true misconception of what sailing a cruiser is all about.

    Nothing to be proud of.

  • @dilecta54 ...about the music!

  • @blueskyredkite Ahahahahahahah...you're right!

  • Nice!!
