  • very interesting Mr Swift! Long live Romance.....

Yes a sad situation both for Queen Mary and Purcell.

Many experts believe that Purcell was in love with Mary, locked as she was into a loveless marriage with the gay William III.She may have loved Purcell too,but she had no way(being Queen) of reciprocating her feelings..Also,as William was 12 years older than Mary, and Purcell was only 3 years older they probably had much more in common.I have always thought that Purcell died of a broken heart?Ain't I an old romantic!

  • royal jelly for the queen bee - in this case Queen Mary, who sadly died of smallpox at 32 years, 6 months after her birthday music was performed. Purcell composed her funeral music as well and he himself died within a year. Both buried in Westminster Abbey.

  • E' troppo presto.

  • when was this??

  • It's great to see Purcell still inspiring excellent perfromances three hundred years after his death. Well done.
