Dr. Brian May has an ACTUAL doctorate in astrophysics which he earned from Imperial College London in 2008.

According to wikipedia he also co-authored a book called “Bang! – The Complete History of the Universe” with Sir Patrick Moore.

Actually, I think "from the blue" refers to the blue sky. As in the spaceship came down out of the sky when it returned home from its journey ("the volunteers came home that day").
