  • i thought that unicorn dance was mainly done by southern praying mantis not hung gar

  • Depends on your lineage. Wan Chi Ming is definately not southern mantis. Personally I have seen all types of these dances and it seems to not be style specific.

  • If you check my channel and go to my website gallery, you'll see a pic of the group when I was there. Greg Rooney, Edrick, Sanford Wong, etc.

  • I trained with Wan Chi Ming when he was on Allen Street back in the 1970's

  • Also notice the smaller unicorn head and horn swerving movements. Very different play from the lion dance.

  • check wikipedia for a start. there is way too much info to be posted here. Google is your friend here.

  • i used to be scared of this when i was a kid. the scary looking face and the tempo of the drums and cymbols spooked the crap outta me. it seemed like it was mad at me and was chasing me

  • @race2max: Unicorn is actually performed by Tai Pang people. Since Wan Chi Ming is Tai Pang, up at Wan chi Ming Hung Gar Institute, we perform unicorn.

  • Why did you stop practicing with Sifu Wan Chi Ming. He's actually pretty cool.

  • @race2max unicorn dance is performed by southern mantis (hakka background) and by people from Tai Pang. Wan Chi Ming teaches hung gar, but he is from Tai pang.

  • Hey Wan Chi Ming was yer Sifu? I'm actually from Wan Chi Ming's school.

  • That is a Southern Unicorn. It shares similar purposes to lion dancing. The dancing is indeed very different, and the instruments varie. I've seen troupes use drum, no drum, or small drum, but it all depends on where you studied, and what you were taught.

Their is an Northern Unicorn(2 horns), and Northern Lion as well.

Unicorns are commonly danced by Hakka people, and Chow Ga Tong Long practitioners.
