Back in the days of the ITV News Channel (2005) I did a quick little comparison of it to "The Day Today" (1994) and "Brass Eye" (1997). Despite them being 11 years apart, the similarities were surprisingly easy to find.

1. Over the top titles featuring the globe
2. Fake, awkward and strained banter
3. Excessively graphical transitions
4. Unnecessary walking to introduce a reporter
5. Indecipherable and meaningless charts

  • This comparison is a dated underestimation; the brand new extra shite ITV News latest theme music sounds identical to the Day Today. Someone tell me theyre having a laugh.

  • @youngian67 I know, I did this in 2005 and yet they haven't learned. Today, the comparison grows stronger.

  • No The Day Today = Newsnight with Jeremy Paxman! Look at the set, and Chris Morris' impersonation of him xD

  • parodies of themselves :)

  • The comparisons are spot on. The difference between Chris Morris/Armando Iannucci fans and current affairs producers are that the fans get the joke. However, the producers are so thick they think their satirical output are genuine lessons on how to make the news.

Their thickness is so strong they believe every time audience figures go down the answer is to dumb it down further. News producers are a bunch of dumbing down f*$Knuts and a£$ecandles.

  • I bet Chris Morris had thought of the "march-to-the-desk-after saying the headlines" bit...

  • The comparison from 2:00 is brilliant.

  • ITV News is actually funnier.

  • @ChristopherPooleUK Not really. The theme tune, maybe. But the unnecessary walking? Gone. The meaningless virtual floor graphs? Gone. The banter from the news channel? Gone. (Apart from And Finally... but that doesn't go to seriousness afterwards, does it?). Over the top titles - sadly remain. No titles in 2008 was probably a good idea. But anyway. It's definitely less tacky.

  • The computer graphics designers who did the ITN news reports were the same people who were hired by the The Day Today's producers. Who else do you think did them?

  • But, at what cost? *walk to non-existent screen*

  • Entertaining but The Day Today was a parody of programs like the the ITV news. Of course there will be similarities - that was the whole point.
