Lea Salonga performing "Send in the Clowns" during the PhilDev Gala - Suites by Sondheim, November 7, 2011 at Lincoln Center, Alice Tully Hall, New York, New York.
She was spot on from the first phrasing. Well done. However, this song really belongs to Judi Dench--it's the age and life lived and the tragedy of mistimed love that only she can portray while tearing herself to pieces, and feebly picking herself up again in her stunning rendition of the song.
I think she does a wonderful job at this... but she learned from the master.... both Lea Salonga & Bernadette Peters can be spotted sitting on stools behind Judi Dench at the HEY MR. PRODUCER concert....... taking MENTAL NOTES
A heartbreaking performance.... at 1:35 I get chills.... all performances of this song are directly compared to Judi Dench and Bernadette Peters... BUT go look at the Judi Dench version at HEY MR. PRODUCER... and you'll see Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga sitting on stools behind Judi..... TAKING MENTAL NOTES...... it's like they both learned from the master.............. brava!
in the beginning, i am a little afriad and worried that lea's voice may be too clear, beautiful, soft, sweet for these songs because these songs were mostly sung by judi dench or bernadette peters(also love her). they focused much more on emotion than beatiful voice. but it seems like my worries are needless, lea really expressed her emotion successfully and still keep her wonderful voice!
@RosesNightengales However, I think she choked up a bit in a few of her lines. ==>obviously, she tried to make some changes in her voice for this song. after all, she is well-known for her clear voice, but clear voice doesn't suit this song. though having not listened to her not a day goes by, i assume she might also do some crack or other things to make her voice more old and sad!!
She did this song really well.. I would have loved to seen her as Desiree, considering she's got a beautiful voice. However, I think she choked up a bit in a few of her lines. But that's okay. I still love her <3
A Stunning, Beautiful Performance of Lea Salonga...the Great Judi Dench and Lea Salonga are equally beautiful in singing this song...
