Those tighter tolerances and less rattle means better accuracy but LESS TOLERANCE for dirt, sand and mud!

One of the ways to keep the M16/M4 clean is by ALWAYS CLOSING the ejection port dust cover every time you see it open and to USE A MUZZLE CAP.

We have all done the muzzle cap thing and it lasts about one use and then its gone. AWOL, UA--however you want to call it:

LOOSE ITEMS GET LOST.

Here's a solution.

Repeat this over and over again until its committed to long-term memory and is a part of your way of life.

WHERE should the muzzle cap be located?

LIKE-THINGS-TOGETHER!: on the barrel when not on its muzzle end...

HOW do we get it there?

Take a 24" piece of gutted 550 parachute cord, fold in half and tie an overhand knot near the end but leave enough for one more overhand knot.

Cut a hole in the center of your muzzle cap end and push the 550 cord loop's free ends through from the INSIDE so the knot stops, then tie an overhand on the outside of the end to secure it. Cut/flame the excess.

ON THE MUZZLE: place the cap on as you normally would; the 550 cord will just rest inside the flash suppressor space.

ON THE BARREL: when you want to fire, remove muzzle cap, pull out the 550 cord loop and girth-hitch to the front sight assembly bar over the barrel; pull tight and over the muzzle cap. Press the muzzle cap itself through the triangle space of the front sight assembly so it rests there.

NOT-LIKE-THINGS-TOGETHER OPTION: with the muzzle cap 550 dummy corded, you could hang it onto your LBE's carabiner/snaplink, or a small snaplink on your ACU trouser's belt loop but it will be amongst a bunch of other things going on and will not stand out by being where it belongs.
